What Can I Use To Monitor Bruxism At Night?

If you’ve read this blog, I’m currently focusing on reducing my long-term jaw pain, which likely is a result of bruxism. I’ve tried many different treatments over the years, but cannot say anything really worked for sure.

I’m looking for a way to actually monitor how often I clench or grind my teeth. That way I can try to figure out what actually helps me. However, I’m not finding many options on the market. I do recall buying some devices many years ago, so will check what I have.

In this blog post, I’m going to list possible things that I can use to monitor my bruxism right now and other items in development. This will be an ongoing list.

GrindAlert/SleepGuard

This is a biofeedback headband that has been around for a long time. I actually have this device which has been sitting in a drawer for years. This device is meant to stop the activity of bruxism by working with your subconscious mind and sound.

I cannot recall how much the device helped me in the past, but I do plan to use it in my experiments to measure my bruxism.

SOVN (in development)

This device is currently in development, but appears to be what I’m looking for. It’s a set of ear buds used to detect bruxism. It will have a mobile app to track your bruxism behavior and determine your triggers.

It’s supposed to actually interrupt your jaw movement once it begins without disrupting your actual sleep.

Currently, they have a waitlist. I will be emailing the company for further information.

byteSense (in Development)

This is a smart night guard in development that helps to track teeth grinding and optimize your health. It monitors your data and recommends changes to manage bruxism.

They take into account your lifestyle choices, stress and anxiety, and sleep quality with their recommendations.

BruxOff

I found this device mentioned in real studies online involving bruxism. It’s described as a device designed to detect the surface electromyography signal from the two masseter muscles, in addition to your heart rate using three surface electrodes.

They use a software called Bruxmeter in order to display and process the data.

When viewing their website, they appear based out of Italy, so I’ll find out if I’m able to even order this device to the U.S.

Do I Snore or Grind App

This smartphone app is meant to record your snoring or teeth grinding. Their algorithm is able to filter and detect these sounds specifically. You can also track your sleep cycle and awakenings. You can choose to record just grinding or snoring or both.

It’s available in the Apple App Store for the Iphone and Ipad, and on Google Play for Android devices.

I’m unsure if this can detect any clenching activities though.

So Which Device Will I Choose?

At this point, I have more research to do on price and when some of these devices will be released.

I’m hoping that I can get a free trial and then document my experience here. Otherwise, I’m still very motivated to get out of pain, so willing to buy a device if it will help monitor my bruxism.

Let me know if you have any other recommendations.
